Walking With Jesus as Our Advisor

Learning to Seek His Wisdom Before Making Our Decisions

Scripture: Isaiah 9:6 (KJV)

“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”

Today's Lesson

One of the greatest blessings of having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ is knowing that we do not have to navigate life without divine counsel.

Every day, we face decisions concerning our families, finances, relationships, businesses, ministries, and personal responsibilities. Some decisions are simple, while others carry consequences that can affect our future.

But here is something we must understand: Jesus never intended for us to make every decision independently and then ask Him to bless what we have already decided.

He desires to be involved in every area of our lives.

The Bible calls Him our Wonderful Counsellor. This means His wisdom is not limited by human understanding, circumstances, or what appears possible.

When we learn to walk with Jesus as our Advisor, we begin to approach life differently.

Instead of asking, "What do I want to do?" we begin asking, "Lord, what would You have me to do?"

1. Seek His Counsel Before Making Decisions

Proverbs 3:5–6 (KJV)

“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

Sometimes we create unnecessary challenges because we move ahead without seeking God's direction.

We make commitments, enter relationships, accept opportunities, and develop plans based entirely on what looks good at the moment.

Then, when difficulties arise, we ask God to help us straighten everything out.

But walking with Jesus means inviting Him into the process before we make the decision.

Prayer should not be our last resort. It should be our first response.

Divine direction is more valuable than human ambition.

2. Learn to Recognize His Voice

John 10:27 (KJV)

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.”

Jesus did not say His sheep would simply know about Him. He said they would hear His voice and follow Him.

There is a difference between hearing instruction and walking in obedience.

As we spend time in God's Word, prayer, and fellowship with the Holy Ghost, we develop spiritual sensitivity to recognize the Lord's direction.

His guidance will never contradict His written Word.

Sometimes His instruction will challenge our preferences, interrupt our plans, or require patience when we want immediate results.Morning Devotional — October 20, 2026

Sometimes His instruction will challenge our preferences, interrupt our plans, or require patience when we want immediate results.

But we must remember that Jesus sees what we cannot see and understands what we do not yet know.

3. Allow Jesus to Correct Your Course

Revelation 3:19 (KJV)

“As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.”

A good advisor does not simply agree with everything we want to do.

There are times when the Lord will challenge our motives, correct our attitudes, and redirect our decisions.

We must be mature enough to receive His correction without becoming discouraged.

Sometimes the greatest expression of God's love is His willingness to stop us from continuing in the wrong direction.

Not every open door is an assignment from God, and not every opportunity is meant for us.

The wisdom to say no can be just as important as the faith to say yes.

4. Walk With Jesus Daily, Not Occasionally

John 15:5 (KJV)

“I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.”

Walking with Jesus is not a Sunday morning activity. It is a daily relationship.

He wants to be involved in how we lead our families, treat others, conduct business, serve in ministry, and respond to difficult situations.

We should never become so confident in our experience, education, position, or abilities that we stop seeking His counsel.

Experience can teach us what worked yesterday, but only God knows what tomorrow holds.

Our responsibility is to remain connected to Him.

Success without His direction can lead us somewhere He never intended us to go.

5. Trust His Wisdom Even When You Do Not Understand

Psalm 32:8 (KJV)

“I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.”

There will be times when God's direction does not make sense to our natural understanding.

He may instruct us to wait when we want to move, give when resources appear limited, forgive when we have been wronged, or step forward when circumstances seem uncertain.

But trusting Jesus means believing that His wisdom is greater than our perspective.

We do not need to know everything about tomorrow to obey Him today.

When we make Jesus our Wonderful Counsellor, we can move forward with confidence, knowing that our lives are surrendered to His direction.

Today's Encouragement

Before you make that important phone call, sign that agreement, accept that opportunity, respond to that conflict, or make that financial commitment, take time to seek the Lord.

Ask Him for wisdom.

Search His Word.

Pray and remain sensitive to the guidance of the Holy Ghost.

Seek godly counsel where appropriate, and make decisions that reflect biblical principles.

Do not allow pressure, fear, impatience, or the opinions of others to become the controlling voices in your life.

Jesus is not simply someone we call upon when life becomes difficult. He is the Wonderful Counsellor we are privileged to walk with every day.

Today's Declaration

I choose to walk with Jesus as my Wonderful Counsellor. I will not lean solely upon my own understanding. I acknowledge Him in my decisions, relationships, finances, business, family, and ministry. My heart is open to His correction, my ears are attentive to His instruction, and my steps are ordered according to His Word. I trust His wisdom above my own.

Let Us Pray

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for giving us Jesus Christ, our Wonderful Counsellor, and for the precious Holy Ghost who leads us into truth.

Today, we surrender our plans, ambitions, decisions, and responsibilities to You.

Lord Jesus, teach us to seek Your counsel before we move. Give us wisdom when we face difficult decisions, patience when we need to wait, and courage when You instruct us to move forward.

Close every door that would lead us outside Your will, and help us recognize the opportunities that align with Your purpose.

Protect us from making decisions driven by fear, frustration, pride, or impatience.

Guide our families, strengthen our marriages, establish the work of our hands, and give us wisdom concerning our finances, businesses, and ministries.

May we never become so busy working for You that we forget the importance of walking with You.

Let our lives reflect Your wisdom, Your character, and Your presence in everything we do.

In Jesus' mighty name, Amen.

Today's Reminder

Before you make your next move, consult the One who already knows the way.

Jesus is not only our Savior and Lord. He is our Wonderful Counsellor, our faithful Shepherd, and the One who directs our steps.

Walk with Him. Listen to Him. Trust Him. Follow Him.
